The Secret Garden piece to this collection…
With heart quilting and stunning chintz border, this quilt is a wonderful study piece.
Comprised of 42 9 Patch blocks, set on point, 6 by 7 with double pink alternating squares and setting triangles. There is a 6" wide chintz border on all 4 sides. Thick cotton batting and an off white cotton reverse.

Chintz comes from the Hindi word chint, which means “speckled,” “variegated,” “spotted,” or “sprayed.”

It is a medium weight plain weave cotton fabric, often printed with large motifs of flora and fauna on lighter plain backgrounds and then given a glazed or polished finish.

These fabrics reached their peak in popularity, in terms of them being used in quilting, in the early to mid 19th century but have been around since the 16th century.

It is rare to come across chintz in quilts past the 1850s or so, and due to the rarity of us coming across quilts dated earlier then the 1850s as it is, we don’t see it often.

When we do, it feels like the textile equivalent of being let into a secret garden.

I’m sure you can see why.

How it’s made: Hand pieced and hand quilted.

Weight: Medium

Measurements laid flat: 69” × 83”

C O N D I T I O N
In fair condition with some spots and fabric deterioration in the Turkey Red fabric piecework. Several of the squares are covered from a past conservation effort with 1930s fabrics and can be removed if so desired.
Overall discoloration.

Most importantly: Please do not cut this quilt for a coat or other project. It is too beautiful and in gorgeous condition and a work of art in and of itself. It would be tragic to cut up such a beautiful piece of textile history.

⋒ This is an antique piece, all photos have been taken in natural light and with limited editing to reflect its condition. Please keep in mind all antique pieces have little imperfections and reflect the story and charm of the piece.

⋒ This find will ship to you within one week of purchasing. International and combined shipping is available, please contact us via instagram DM at @Folkling for a personalized shipping quote.
