1880s Signed Nine Patch Twin Quilts
We’ve kept these two in the archives for over a year...
Dated and signed, 1881 and 1882, these two matching nine patch calico quilts are hands down some of the most remarkable and beautiful quilts we’ve ever come across.
These are once-in-a-lifetime special for a number of reasons:
•To find a signed quilt is a rare and special happenstance.
•To find *matching* quilts from the same maker is even more rare.
•To find quilts from this era in this pristine condition is additionally incredible.
To find quilts with all of these traits?? Well let’s just say it’s never happened to us in all of our quilt curating ventures and likely will never happen again.
Many people have caught sight of these in the brick and mortar and we’ve enjoyed The conversations we’ve had about them this past year.
But as much as we love this pair, and will likely never come across ones like them again, they deserve to be loved and used vs. staying stored away in our inventory.
They do vary in size a bit— so double check the measurements!
Originally bought from a family outside of Houston Texas.
D E T A I L S
How it’s made: hand quilted and hand pieced
Weight: light
Measurements laid flat: 73” x 81” and 64” x 75”
Shown on standard twin sized beds.
C O N D I T I O N
Missing one or two pieces of patchwork and also some wear to a couple of other patchwork pieces due to the dye process used on these walnut calicos at the time that causes them to deteriorate over time. Some slight discoloration fold lines to the back of these quilts due to the nature of how they were previously stored.
In otherwise pristine condition.
Most importantly: Please do not cut this quilt for a coat or other project my friends. It is too beautiful and in gorgeous condition and a work of art in and of itself. It would be tragic to cut up such a beautiful piece of textile history.
⋒ This is an antique piece, all photos have been taken in natural light and with limited editing to reflect its condition. Please keep in mind all antique pieces have little imperfections and reflect the story and charm of the piece.
