1870s Melon Patch Quilt
This 1870s Melon Patch patterned quilt is incredible. The dyes used on the fabrics are probably home-made vegetable dyes. The batting has visible cotton seeds, indicating earlier methods of ginning cotton. Origin is the southern part of the United States near the end of the 19th century.
The double boarders are wide and frame the quilt’s striking graphics with the punch of red and white. Honeycomb- shaped designs are separated by small squares on 4 edges, comprised of 4 small triangles of 2 different colors.
The graphic, dark red is very striking against the off-white and the subtle, madder browns. In unused condition with a few minor age stains that do not detract from the overall visual impact or value of this early quilt. A very graphic piece of Americana in a pattern variation not frequently found. Tan fabric re-confirms the early date, 1860-1880 quilts often used madder browns and reds.
Appraisal price from the previous owner in 1986 was $595 and antique quilts have increased significantly over the past 25+ years. Since that time, it has been kept in acid-free tissue paper. No odors, tears, or other issues that would detract from overall value.
D E T A I L S
Hand pieced and hand quilted at 10-13 stitches per inch in diagonal and straight furrows.
A nice light-medium weight quilt for the transition in seasons.
Measurements laid flat:
88” x 72”
Shown on a standard Full size bed
C O N D I T I O N
In very gorgeous useable condition. Has some spots and discoloring throughout, mostly from storage. Some couching (foxing) due to age and being stored in a trunk on the back.
Most importantly: Please do not cut this quilt for a coat or other project my friends. It is too beautiful and in gorgeous condition and a work of art in and of itself. It would be tragic to cut up such a beautiful piece of textile history.
⋒ This is an antique piece, all photos have been taken in natural light and with limited editing to reflect its condition. Please keep in mind all antique pieces have little imperfections and reflect the story and charm of the piece.
