1850s Virginia Crossed Laurel Leaves Quilt

$868.00

This quilt was possibly made earlier than the 1850s and is truly stunning. With 16 whole and four half pattern blocks in insane calicos we’ve never seen before on white ground, featuring green laurel leaves with Turkey red petals, having all-over diagonal grid quilting, probably later applied binding possibly covering original binding, three-paneled plain backing. Another nearly identical example of this quilt has a history of ownership in the Shenandoah Valley.

How it’s made: Hand quilted, hand stitched applique and binding

Weight: light to medium

Measurements laid flat: 81" x 92"

Shown on a standard Full size bed.

Good overall condition, top with overall toning, scattered stains and spotting, some red fabric pieces with typical losses to dark-colored print, some light fading mostly to green fabrics, backing with toning mostly along fold lines and edges, overall spotting, scattered stains, one mended hole to one corner, at least one other small hole in another corner. In generally stunning shape and a true collectors piece.

Most importantly: Please do not cut this quilt for a coat or other project. It is too beautiful and in gorgeous condition and a work of art in and of itself. It would be tragic to cut up such a beautiful piece of textile history.

⋒ This is an antique piece, all photos have been taken in natural light and with limited editing to reflect its condition. Please keep in mind all antique pieces have little imperfections and reflect the story and charm of the piece.
