The Folkling Field Kerchief
When we make things around here, we make them slowly, and with a whole lot of heart.
—The Folkling Field Kerchief—
Introducing the first made-to-order design in the Folkling Heirloom collection.
This is a piece I dreamed up and designed over a year ago, and finally bringing it to life for you all feels akin to getting back to my roots and the kind of dreams I had back in 2010 when I used to design and knit for a living.
I spent a very small window of that season pursuing what I called at the time “sustainable knitwear”.
A phrase and term that was mostly foreign in the marketplace and consumer mindset during those years. I spent time learning how to process my own fleeces, spin wool, knit and create garments in a start-to-finish concept that I called “from sheep to sweater”.
Had I stuck with it at the time, I could have gotten somewhere most likely, for I was just a few years ahead of what later became a larger and more common conversation about fast fashion, ethical consumption, sustainable manufacturing, and the idea that we should understand where our clothing comes from and how it is made.
But I stopped.
Discouraged at the inability to make consistent connections with farmers, and frustrated by the lack of understanding and value placed around holistically made garments.
I pursued my photography work instead, and told stories with my camera, vs. my knitting needles.
Fast forward 14 years…
Folkling has become so much more than a shop centered around the love of old things, but speaks to a different kind of lifestyle altogether.
I have dreams of this aspect of Folkling becoming more prominent in the future, but all dreams have to start somewhere, and so for now— this humble kerchief will be one of the beginning chapters.
Intended for cold days outside working, as an extra layer around the neck of your favorite sweater, or around your head to stave off the chill around your ears.
With multiple uses and styling options, made from a hardwearing lambswool and mohair blend yarn that is averse to pilling and is heartier than your average wool.
Each kerchief is handknit from this limited batch of sustainably sourced yarn that has been raised in Virginia and processed responsibly in New York.
Thanks for supporting this slowly created dream.
